Answers to your Frequently Asked Questions
>>About Very Low Calorie Diets
What is a very low calorie diet (VLCD)?
A very low calorie diet or VLCD as it is known is a weight loss programme that provides less than 800kcal per day. Most VLCD's these days include meal replacement pack & bar products to help overweight people with a rapid weight loss. If used correctly they are more than just a Rapid weight loss diet, whilst getting intune with your body whilst following a VLCD you will also realise that they offer the opportunity to understand how you react to certain foods, identify your triggers, reasons for overeating, realise your old portion size, you even detox whilst using the mealpacks and therefore taste buds and need for high carb - sugary foods decrease after weight loss phase and with a little self control maintaining your target weight is generally easier than ever before. The composition of ProtiKee foods packs and food permitted on the KeeDiet VLCD plans (Rapid Burn / KeeLite), help control food cravings with their low carb / sugar content, satisfy hunger with high protein ratio and promote a ketosis (fat burning) condition, which is known to decrease hunger, making dieting easier with easy to use portion controlled fast food packs.
Which KeeDiet Plan(s) are considered a VLCD?
We have two VLCD plans, our Rapid Burn which uses a minimum of x4 daily mealpack products and our KeeLite plan which requires a minimum of x3 daily products + one daily healthy meal of 200kcal, both are considered a VLCD as the calories you will consume daily will be under 800kcal. With both Kee VLCD's you will use either all or mainly all mealpacks to substitute conventional foods, the choice is really yours and which you prefer. Some clients prefer to step completely away from the distraction conventional food can bring, whilst others prefer to have a controlled mealpack day and look forward to an evening meal and possibly a bar/snack/wafer in the evening. Are VLCD's safe?
VLCD plans are now recognised by the NHS and openly discussed as a method of successful dieting on NHS Choices. Available in the UK for over 20 years, and the ProtiKee manufacturer having over 30 years experience, they have recently gained more momentum with the pictures & success stories we see in the press and hear from friends. Studies by COMA (Committee on Medical Aspects of Health and Nutrition) based in the UK, and also the European Union, have proved that a VLCD can help people lose weight quickly and safely when used correctly with medical supervision. VLCD's are also recommended by the UK’s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) as suitable weight loss programme for obese patients. However, this body also recommends that VLCD's are not used for more than 12 weeks. KeeDiet abide by this ruling, and ask clients to break at Week 12 and if after the 13th week if you need to return to Rapid Burn or Kee Lite you can do so with medical agreement only. Are VLCD's useful and effective?
Yes, VLCD diet plans are very effective as weight loss is rapid compared to conventional dieting, which is extremely motivating and will improve your health from the very start. Our VLCD's are not just another weight loss plan, they allow you an opportunity to step away from conventional eating for a short time whilst you drop weight quickly, identify bad eating habits, banish overeating whilst you detox your body from all the high carb, sugar and fatty foods you may be eating. Another great advantage of VLCD's is that your body must burn stored fat for engery, whilst in this process you will not feel physically hungry and you will start to feel more energetic. The result is that you are more likely to succeed than with a conventional slimming diet.My BMI is high------ Which plan can I follow?
A VLCD plan can be very beneficial for those with a high BMI, but a higher BMI places greater risk on the dieter of undiagnosed medical conditions, so extra care must be taken. The chart below should give you some guidance of the plans that we suggest can be considered. Any dieter with a BMI of 40+ should be medically supervised through their weight loss stage by a medically trained professional. They should also undergo a full medical review before they begin and we suggest regular reviews and advise a medical review once they have lost 20kgs, although you should act on your Doctors advise. Conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol will need to be monitored so that medication can be adjusted if necessary. For
clients with a higher BMI it is not necessary or advised to drop
calories too drastically at the beginning of any weight loss phase, instead
stepping down calories is advantageous and will be more successful long
term. Following guidance in the table below is advised. Those with a higher BMI can
still expect a fast/rapid weight loss which should continue until a Healthier Weight is achieved. It is important to maintain a steady rate of weight loss, as your BMI decreases you can if wish step down calories as required. The rate of weight loss can be high in the first two / three weeks due to associated water loss, but after this should start to steady. Before starting any weight loss phase confirm suitability with your doctor and follow their medical advice & request their
support throughout your weight loss phase.
The chart below shows the lowest plan that a client may consider, based on their BMI category. Medical conditions or Medication may still make a preferred plan unsuitable and we advise all clients to undergo a medical review to confirm suitability.

How much weight will I lose with KeeDiet?
In
truth this is a difficult question to answer, but one that we are often
asked. Everyone is different so the average weight loss figure
can only be used as a guide. With all weight loss programmes there is
generally a substantial weight loss registered in the first two weeks,
with a VLCD programme this is even greater with the depletion of
glycogen store (stored carbs and fluid) and clients can sometimes reduce
weight by an amazing 10-14lb in this time, giving the dieter an instant lighter feeling & great motivational boost.
If pushed on the subject and from research we would expect the average weekly weight loss after the first two weeks thereafter is around 3-4lb for women and more for men (5-6lb). Whilst on a Vlcd, we would expect most women lose at least one stone per month and this is considerably more for men. KeeDiet help you to lose weight quickly and safely and to maintain that weight loss with our stabilisation and maintenance programmes.
Will I put the weight back on when I finish a VLCD?
This is really down to you and how you act once you have completed the weight loss stage of dieting. If you go back to your old habits, with a too high calorie intake, then yes, you will regain weight – this is the same for any slimming diet programme when you reach the end. But if you get intune with your body whilst following a VLCD and learn from the abstainance experience, making small changes once eating again, any gain should be small whilst your glycogen stores refill.
To regain a pound of fat you simply have to eat 3500 more calories than your body requires for normal functions, this sounds huge but break this up over a week and it becomes just 500kcal too much each day, simply by changing your milk to skimmed, stopping uncessary snacking, a little more exercise or using continued ProtiKee mealpack can help).
With Rapid weight loss, does weight go back on quicker?
Contrary to common belief it really doesn't matter how quickly you lose your surplus fat. Fat will go back on at the same speed if you continuously overeat and consume too many calories. The way you lose weight has nothing to do with how you put it back on. After the initial weight loss phase, KeeDiet offer stabilisation and maintenace step up programmes for you to follow with Social (1) - New You (2) - Lifestyle (3) and Lifestyle (4). These encourage healthy eating and you will gradually be increasing conventional healthy foods, decreasing dependance on mealpacks, forming a new healthy eating weight regime, concentrating on portion sizes, and can take advantage of the effects of decreased hunger and need for high fat, carb, sugary foods that following a VLCD has. Using the KeeDiet programmes as designed, we show you how to maintain your weight loss and make it permanent.
Can I give blood whilst following a VLCD?
Our Rapid & KeeLite programme should not be followed for one week preceding blood donation and for one week after. During this time it would be wise to raise energy intake levels up to 1200kcal/d. If you feel this interupt your programme and make returning to a VLCD difficult we would suggest that you abstain from giving blooduntil you have completed your weight loss phase
Will my metabolic rate be damaged by a VLCD?
The main determinants of the body are the weight & amount of lean (muscle) tissue. Us humans have evolved to be super efficient at conserving energy. When dietary energy intake is insufficient the body adapts by reducing heat and energy loss and our metabolic rate drops. After weight loss and the establishment of a new lower energy requirement, metabolism of the body should return to a level appropriate for the new amount of body weight and lean tissue. It is wise to remember that the lower weight you will become requires less calories to properly function, therefore after the weight loss phase you will naturally need to consume less calories, this can often be confused with a low metabolic rate after weight loss.
Why do I have to involve my doctor?
We strongly encourage all clients to involve their doctors, even those in perfect health and recommend that anyone wishing to follow any weight loss programme, at any calorie level should check with their doctor first that the programmes is suitable. Obesity is a significant factor in a number of medical conditions and anyone who is obese may have developed a medical condition of which they are unaware of. We list your doctor agreeing to your plan as a requirement on all VLCD and LCD programmes.
We are not trained medical practioners, therefore any advice on our website or litreature is guidance information only and is not intended to treat, cure or to be taken as a replacement for professional medical advice. You are responsbile for you own continued good health, a VLCD type programme is not suitable for all persons, particular medical conditions or some medications and if a VLCD or LCD is used without your doctors agreement could be deterimental to your long term health or in certain extreme circumstances death. We therefore advise ALL clients to ensure their continued good health comes first and if considering starting a KeeDiet programme to speak with their doctor first. Medical Guidance
What sugar substitutes can I use?
Although you can add tablet sweeteners to your hot drinks you should limit them, powder sweeteners should be avoided due as the manufacturing process . Although most sweeteners have no carbs their anti-clumping agents contain approximately 1g of carbohydrates per serving. Limit your intake to approximately three portions a day of any of the following
sweeteners: saccharin (Sweet 'N Low), sucralose (Splenda) or Xylitol. A
natural alternative is Stevia (Truvia or SweetLeaf).
Why can't I drink alcohol in Induction?
Whilst following a VLCD or Low Calorie Diet plan you should avoid alcoholic beverages for two reasons. First, although spirits have zero carbs (dry wine and light beer have some; regular beer has lots), your body will burn alcohol before fat and can affect Ketosis due to the sugar content. This means that weight loss stops until alcohol leaves your system and ketosis has to be re-established. Second, alcohol can affect both your judgment and your willpower. Once you're in maintenance, you can introduce alcohol beverages.
Can I drink caffeinated coffee?
We would recommend that you try cutting down on your caffein intake prior to starting a VLCD as common side effects such as headaches and fatigue will be magnified if trying to cut back whilst initially cutting back on carbs and sugars. There's no reason to avoid caffeinated coffee (or tea) throughout a VLCD or diet plan, but don't overdo it. Research associates moderate caffeine intake with improved long-term health and weight control. Coffee is full of antioxidants and can mildly enhance fat burning. Coffee & Tea are not counted as part of your liquid requirement and instead consider replacing with water or a hot water flavouring.
What can I expect in the early days?
Once on the plan and over the first few days you may experience some headaches, general fatigue and mood swings, this is all quite natural and expected due to the body detoxing from carbohydrates, sugars, additives and the withdrawal of carbohydrates and sugars you are used to consuming each day. These common side affects should pass by the 4th day of your VLCD programme. Ensure you are drinking sufficient water and if required take a headache remedy to ease the pressure. Go easy in the first few days of your plan, remember your available energy is failling and you will naturally feel fatigued with possible muscle weakness. Plan starting your diet and have a few easy days until your ketosis is well established.
If unpleasant feelings persist or you are ever concerned that all is not well, we would advise you to pause the plan and seek medical advice.
Can I exercise whilst following a VLCD?
Although
we agree and understand that exercise is a great way to tone up, get
fit and it helps to reduce weight, we do suggest that you abstain from
exercise in the early days of your VLCD / LCD plan until around the
3rd week and then advise you to slowly reintroduce. Gentle exercise
can be taken but you should listen to your body and be sensible. Those who wish to exercise regular whilst following
a VLCD / LCD may find that using one of the optional food packs will
really help.
Remember that if following a VLCD plan or LCD plan you are
restricting your energy intake and may feel extremely tired after
strenuous exercise. The danger of doing too much exercise on a VLCD is that if your
body does not have enough "fuel" it may start breaking down muscle - your
heart is a muscle and you could be putting too much strain on your organs. Something to bear in mind.
What happens if I eat on a VLCD?
It is strongly advised that you stick to the plan rules 100% to ensure you reach Ketosis as quickly as possible and remain in Ketosis throughout your VLCD Weight Loss Programme. If you have taken the time to explore, purchase, and start a VLCD, eating anything not permitted could mean you are throwing away your best ever chance to be slim. Set yourself goals and targets and determine yourself to meet them. A VLCD is 99% attitude, they are a different type of weight loss programme an you can not overeat one day to cut back the next. Abstainance really does mean total food abstinance and this is why they can be so successful Once you have entered your body into Ketosis (Fat Burning) - Cherish it, Safeguard it, Enjoy it - Ketosis will make your weight loss quicker and easier than ever before.
If you find that you are starting to pick, use non-permitted drinks etc, it’s time to take stock and probably start over. Read again the rules and follow with strict determination & break the cycle. It is generally considered more difficult the second time to enter Ketosis, your body is aware what is coming and will make it harder to deplete your glycogen store so make your first attempt count. If you find you are unable to totally abstain from foods check out our other plans your sure to find another than suits your lifestyle better.
Sugar free chewing gum is allowed in moderation, we would advise you to choose your brand carefully try to pick one without citric acid as this may affect Ketosis. Also only chew whilst there is still flavour, once the flavour has diminished stop chewing. Other ways to keep you breath fresh are drinking sufficient water, brushing teeth more often, mouth wah and tab breath fresheners.
>>Side Effects
I feel brilliant already, is this normal?
This is very normal and should not cause any concern, it is just one of the benefits of following a VLCD. Just enjoy... you may find after a few weeks a euphoric feeling is not so noticeable !
The fat burning process (ketosis) causes a type of acetone to be released in the breath, which is often described by dieters as a metallic taste in your mouth. This normally more noticeable in the first few days of a VLCD /LCD as you are changing your source of energy to surplus fat and improves as the body settles down; They are a water-soluble form of energy that can be used by most tissues as fuel. Ketones can also pass across the blood-brain barrier to be used by your brain as its primary source of energy when glucose levels are low; drinking lots of water to dilute the acetones, regular brushing of teeth (and tongue) and using a mouth wash will also help. A spray breath freshener can be used.
Why do you get headaches when starting?
Headaches may occur as a result of carbohydrate or caffeine withdrawal. Occasionally, during the initial three days a person may experience carbohydrate withdrawal and may develop a headache. This is a temporary effect and should be tolerated. A simple tablet for headaches, for example paracetamol, taken for a day or two will improve the problem. Insufficient fluid intake could also cause a mild dehydration, and ensuing headache. Ensure that the recommended amount of water is drunk.
It is very important that we constantly replace our body fluids. Sufficient liquid intake is also necessary to maintain proper kidney function. You should drink 2-3 litres of fluid a day. The main reason for this is a very low calorie diet (VLCD) which produces a natural water loss and this must be replaced. Food is largely composed of water, just like our bodies and while on the programme it is necessary to compensate for the fluid that would otherwise have been taken in through food. It is important to keep the body’s fluid levels topped up to prevent the unpleasant symptoms of dehydration – headache, dizziness, fatigue, irritability and constipation. If you can you should drink 250ml of water before each sachet or bar to dilute the concentration of minerals and to help prevent any possible feeling of nausea. Extra fluid enables the body to get rid of the waste products associated with the breakdown of fats resulting from weight loss.
I am constipated what do you suggest?
It is
quite natural for bowel movements to be less frequent because a diet
can contain less bulk, but it passing stools should not really cause you
discomfort or pain. It is generally considered that constipation is
partly a consequence of essential fatty acid deficiency, and it usually
disappears with supplementation. It is strongly suggested that if
following a VLCD you use the optional vegetable/salad allowance to
provide extra fibre to your diet as some medical conditions are
associated with a low fibre intake. In the first instance of
constipation use a laxative to get things back to normal, but if constipation remains a problem you require more regular fibre in your diet and you feel any discomfort, please check you are hydrated and
drinking plenty of water throughout the day. You could also try our
water flavouring, which contain natural fibre, fibre based laxative or herbal laxative, leaf teas are useful along with Psyllium Husks on a low carb diet.
A transient effect that will should only last a short time. Some people are not used to a higher mineral content and it is a good idea to drink an extra glass of water with your ProtiKee products, this will dilute the effect of the minerals in the body. Also try taking mini meals (six / eight half portions) this may feed your vitamins & minerals slowly and help a little. Another possible cause if diarrhoea continues is being lactose intolerance.
Dizziness is a possible transient effect of any low sugar / low carb diet and should only last for a day or so. It is often caused by the diuretic effect that accompanies any low calorie diet. It is important to drink sufficent liquid and possibly a little more than mentioned on your plan. Try to avoid quick changes in position and extreme exertion, during the first few days of the diet the body will excrete a considerable amount of water, which then requires readjustment of the fluid content of different parts of the body.
Due to the reduced thermogenic response to a lower food intake and of course the loss of your insulating fat !, another factor may be the slight reduction in your metabolic rate, this is quite normal during weight loss. Move around a little more, wrap up and wear extra layers.
I have come out in spots, why?
A VLCD or LCD is often referred to as a fast food DETOX programme, you have stopped eating the junk foods and instead are opting for healthy foods and supplements, these are controlling your sugar, fat and carbohydrate leves that you are consuming. You are also drinking more water which is known to have a cleansing effect on the body. You are flushing out your bodies toxins, which may for a short time manifest itself in spots or blemishes. These should not last and others often then compliment you on your fresh, young & glowing complexion.
My skin is dry / I have noticed hair loss?
Hair shedding is associated with many issues – emotional stress, severe illness, pregnancy, hormones, flu and, in a small percentage of people, extensive weight loss. Dry skin and possible hair loss may occur later in your plan during the use of the diet and is generally due to the physiological response to your actual weight loss process rather than the diet products and when your weight has stabilised your hair follicles generally start re-growing.
Both should correct themselves and generally the effects of hair growth & skin regeneration improves with new development. If you are prone to excess hair shedding you are unfortunately at greater risk of this happening whilst dieting. We recommend on all our VLCD programmes the inclusion of nut/seeds or oils, we consider these benefical for many common side affects. Hair shedding should not be confused with alopecia where hair comes out in patches, which is a medical condition needing treatment by a doctor.
Use of an essential fatty acid supplement/canola/flaxseed, walnut / olive oil tsp added to your optional salad is a good preventative or if concerned, consider 1 or 2 capsules of essential fatty acids eg Omega 3,6 & 9 can be taken each day, extra to those in our products which can help stop your skin from drying out and your hair from thinning, possibly step up to the Social Kee Plan or above with a little more conventional food available.
Not a common side affect but bruising is sometimes noticed once a ketogenic diet has been followed, it can mean that you are not receiving sufficient Zinc in your diet and may need to take a daily supplement. On all KeeDiet plans you are recommended and advised to take a daily vitamin & mineral supplement to cover extra essential vitamins & minerals whilst reducing weight as 100% RDA is the minimum requirement, not the maximum. You may also need to take an additional Zinc supplement for a short time or move up a Kee Step. Valuable sources of zinc are meat, eggs and vegetables all recommended on our Kee Plans.
I am getting cramps in my legs, why?
Cramping muscles may occur when on a VLCD and are generally caused by fluid imbalances and dehyration in the body's tissues. The remedy is to drink more water and regular move your muscles. Possibly adding a few grains of salt to soups or put in water at bedtime might help.
Some drugs can cause cramps as a side-effect, or make cramps occur more often. These include: diuretics ('water tablets'), salbutamol used by asthma suffers and others, if using any prescribed medication it is imperative that you first check with you doctor that you are suitable for your chosen programme. Also, if you have other symptoms apart from cramps, see your doctor who may examine you or do some checks to rule out a secondary cause for the cramps.
>>Ketosis
What is Ketosis ?
‘Ketosis’ is a term applied to a state where the ketone blood levels are high enough to allow ketones to leave the body on the breath or in urine."Ketones are a normal and efficient source of fuel and energy for the human body. They are produced by the liver from fatty acids, which result from the breakdown of the bodies fat in response to the absence of glucose/sugar." During ketosis, the body switches from primarily using glucose for energy (sourced from carbohydrates) to primarily using your stored body fat and dietary fat sources for energy. When your body is producing Ketones, and using them for fuel, this is called "Ketosis"."
How do I know I am in Ketosis, is there a test?
The body is very fickle and therefore Ketosis may fluctuate, or you may not even show on the test strip as pink, the best guage is that you are not hungry, feeling well and are continuing to lose weight, you are receiving the benefits of Ketosis. Some weeks weight loss may fluctuate, so do not get too disappointed, the following week will most probably be a good one. (See our section of weight plateau)
If you wish to test your Ketones at home you can purchase the test strips from the KeeDiet store or at most pharmacies, they are usually kept with the diabetic supplies. In some stores they're kept behind the counter, so if you don't see them on the shelf, just ask the pharmacist. Ketostix or Ketur-Test are urine-testing strips; they are small plastic strips that have a little absorptive pad on the end. This contains a special chemical that will change colour in the presence of Ketones in the urine. The strips may change varying shades of pink to purple, or may not change colour at all.
The container will have a scale on the label, with blocks of colour for you to compare the strip after a certain time lapse, usually 15 seconds. Most simply hold a strip in the flow of urine. The absorbent patch can change to a light pink colour, if too dark you may not be drinking sufficient water (everyones requirement is different) and should slowly start increasing your consumption, otherwise you could start to dehydrate and suffer an uncomfortable feeling, headaches, dizziness, nausea etc.
If the absorbant strip remains beige you are most probably not yet in ketosis, or not quiet showing on the scale (drinking lots of water may mean your ketones are diluted in your urine or that your body has found an efficient use for them). It can take different people varying times to reach Ketosis, but for most it is usually takes 72 hours or around day four of the diet.
The chemical reagent is very sensitive to moisture, including what's in the air. It's important to keep the lid of the container tightly closed at all times, except for when you're getting a strip to take a reading. Make sure your fingers are dry.
They also have an expiry date, so make note of this when you purchase the strips, once opened, they have a shelf-life of about 6 months -- you may wish to write the date you opened on the label for future reference.
Why does a Ketosis condition help me lose weight?
Most weight loss diets work by restricting calorie intake, so you shed weight, some of that weight is fat and some of it is lean muscle & tissue. Losing muscle means a slower metabolism, which then makes losing weight more difficult and gaining it back all too easy.
With Kee VLCD plans Rapid Burn & KeeLite you can eat up to six times each day, eating often is known to excelerate fat burning and our ProtiKee products promote a ketosis condition. One of the benefits of Ketosis is that it will help you to lose your FAT & offers PROTECTION to your muscle tissue."Being in Ketosis means that your body's primary source of energy is your fat (in the form of ketones). When you consume adequate protein as well, (ProtiKee are high protein products) there's no need for the body to break down its muscle tissue. Once Ketosis well established it also tends to accelerate fat loss, as once the liver converts fat to ketones, it can't be converted back to fat, and so is excreted" Hence the need for extra water.......
Will I feel hungry whilst on the KeeDiet weight loss plan?
After the first few days, when Ketosis kicks in, nearly all clients report a decreased appetite and this continues through the weeks. Whilst getting into Ketosis and your body is changing it's source of energy you can experience increased hunger especially on day 2 & 3 when your stomach is emptying. You must remain determined, focused, motivated and committed to your weight loss choice and know that this phase will pass quickly. The levels rise when fasting or while on a low carbohydrate diet designed to induce ‘ketosis’. Once in Ketosis it is considered a great benefit and should be treasured and safe-guarded by ensuring you do not consume foods or drinks that will affect your level of ketosis and therefore your weight loss.
Is Ketosis Harmful?
Most people, no matter what type of diet they’re eating, will enter a state of ketosis at some point within a 24-hour period e.g. when asleep. "Being in Ketosis by following a low carbohydrate diet is NOT dangerous. The human body was designed to use Ketones very efficiently as fuel in the absence of glucose. However, the word Ketosis is often confused with a similar word, Ketoacidosis. ("Ketoacidosis is a dangerous condition for diabetics and the main element is ACID not Ketones). Diabetics can follow a Ketogenic diet to reduce fat & weight ... but they must be closely monitored by their health care provider, and blood sugars need to be kept low and stable"
There is an assumption that if a body is burning a lot of fat for energy, it must not be getting "enough" glucose. However, there is no indication, from studying people on reduced carbohydrate diets, that this is the case (though there is usually a short period of adjustment -- less than a week). Although it's true that our bodies can't break fat down into glucose (though, interestingly, they easily use glucose to make fat), our bodies can convert some of the protein we eat into glucose. (Hence the requirement for High Protein products when carbohydrates and sugar are restricted). Indeed, this works well for people who don't tolerate a lot of sugar, because this conversion happens slowly so it doesn't spike blood glucose.
>>Medical Questions
What medication can I take?
Before starting any weight loss plan and especially when following a plan with less than a daily calorie intake of 1200kcals you should consult your doctor and discuss the Diet Plan you are considering. If it is necessary to continue with medication you should adapt your plan according to your Doctors advice and recommendation. Continue with all current prescribed medication unless advised by your G.P, stopping any prescribed medication could be detrimental to your long term health. General painkillers such as anadin, paracetamol can be taken as normal but try to avoid sugar-coated varieties.
What are the obesity related problems?
The definition of obesity is generally accepted as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above. There are many serious health issues related to obesity and it is estimated that being obese can shorten your life by an average of 9 years. What if am on anti-depressant medication? Severe depression is a contra-indication for all programmes. Any client without severe depression who is on anti-depression medication needs to visit their doctor for agreement and support before they can start. Changing your diet and intake of energy foods could seriously affect your mood and health. Be Honest - Be Wise - Be Safe.....
What if I am diabetic?
Type 2 diabetic clients can follow a KeeDiet plan – a low carbohydrate slimming diet can be
very effective in stabilising your blood sugar throughout the day, and
you may find that your medication can be reduced quite quickly on a
KeeDiet weight loss programme
- Type 1 diabetes:
- You cannot use a very low calorie diet if you are Type 1 diabetic.
- Type 2 diabetes:
- Type 2 diabetes can be managed by diet, exercise, tablets and, in some cases, insulin injections. If you have type 2 diabetes, you must speak with your doctor before purchasing and starting any KeeDiet weight loss programme, your GP should agrees to monitor you & your medication regularly. You should also be able to monitor your own blood glucose levels and they should not rise aboveUp to 80% of people with type 2 diabetes can have their medication reduced or stopped by losing weight. Of course, weight loss also has added health benefits. More information on diabetes at http://www.diabetes.org.uk.
What if I suffer from gout?
You must consult your doctor first, those with gout generally also suffer from hyperuricaemia (raised blood levels of uric acid) which is known to cause crystals of sodium urate which are deposited in the joints and is extremely painful. Using a VLCD may also raise these levels and could trigger an attack, particularly in the first few days; Prophylactic treatment with Allopurinol may be advised – please consult your doctor before starting..
What if I have had treatment for Cancer?
There are no specific contra indications to
using the KeeDiet plans after surgery for cancer, provided that full
wound healing has
occurred and the medical and surgical teams approve of the intention to
lose weight. You must consult those who know your case in detail at the Post Operation appointment and we feel it is prudent to leave a 3 month gap from any operation before considering a weight loss plan.
Can I lose weight with you if I have had a heart attack?
Check with your doctor before going on any diet we understand that The KeeDiet Plan is low in Cholesterol, low in sodium and low in fat, and is suitable for weight loss after full recovery. We would recommend regular contact with you Doctor and monitoring.
What if I suffer from High Cholestrol?
Yes you can. Studies have shown that lowering your food intake with Soya based such as ProtiKee meal replacement products are effective in reducing cholesterol levels; blood cholesterol can reduce by as much as 25% and blood fats by 40% whilst on a VLCD.There is also some evidence that, following weight loss, ongoing use of the Diet as part of a healthy diet, i.e. with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, cereals, lean meat, oily fish (e.g. salmon, herring, mackerel, etc), and unsaturated fats, may help control cholesterol levels.
What if I suffer from Osteoarthritis?
Losing excess weight helps relieve symptoms. A lighter body puts less strain on the joints and some patients find
they may need less of their anti-inflammatory drugs to alleviate the
symptoms and your doctor should be consulted and involved.
Could dieting cause gallstones?
Gallstones are small stones, usually made of cholesterol, that form in the gallbladder. In most cases, gallstones do not cause any symptoms. However, in a small number of cases, gallstones can become trapped in a duct (an opening or channel), irritate and inflame the gallbladder, or move out of the gall bladder and into other parts of the body. This can lead to a range of symptoms, such as:
- a sudden intense pain in your abdomen
- nausea and vomiting
- jaundice (yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes)
An overweight person may already have gallstones even if they have never experienced symptoms. Women are more likely, those with a family history, along with people whose weight as risen and fallen and risen again previously (Yo-Yo dieting), plus those using lowering cholestrol medication or birth control pills. A VLCD Plan is therefore not generally the cause of gallstones but may aggreviate them so they become apparent.
Their is a risk with rapid weight loss that gallstones may become active, whatever your BMI and whatever weight loss plan you choose, so dieting with us should not cause you any more chance of getting gallstones than dieting with any other diet. Studies indicate that as long as the VLCD contains more than 7g of fat there is no greater risk of gallstones than when losing weight by other methods. The Keediet VLCD plans provide sufficient healthy fats, we also recommend that those following a VLCD with Kee have extra healthy fats from the nuts/seeds and their oils to help with continued good health. Find out further information about gallstones from the British Liver Trust. www.britishlivertrust.org.uk.
If you have a family history of gallstones we advise speaking with your doctor first and consider following a plan with more than 800kcal daily (Social Plan). If you are presently being medically treated for gallstones you should again discuss your choices with your doctor and could possibly select our New You plan with 1000kcal daily. If gallstones are aggreviated or develope whilst following any plan with us you should immediately stop and seek medical advice.
Can I follow a diet plan if I have high blood pressure?
Yes, you can go on a slimming diet but you must visit your Doctor regularly so that he/she can monitor and alter your medication accordingly whilst using meal replacement products. In fact, as you lose weight quickly, you could see a significant drop in blood pressure because the problem is often compounded in overweight people.
Why are pregnant & breastfeeding women contraindicated?
Pregnant and lactating women require increased
levels of protein and
energy, and are advised to follow a diet rich in lean protein,
wholegrains fresh fruit and vegetables etc. Therefore our products should not be used to replace
any meal whilst pregnant or breastfeeding (fully or partially). After
speaking with your Doctor you can ask if our products are suitable as a
healthy snack instead of high sugar, high carb alternatives.
I have a Thyroid condition – is this a problem?
This shouldn't be a problem, but you must see your doctor regularly so that he or she can adjust your medication as you lose weight fast.
Can I take diuretics?
NO! Taking
diuretics could seriously deplete your potassium levels
and can result in tiredness, weakness and dizziness and potassium
affects your heart muscle. Ask your doctor to
help you choose a more suitable weight loss plan. Do not continue
or stop your medication without consulting your doctor to do so could
seriously damage your health or in extreme circumstance cause death.
Will weight loss affect my menstrual cycle?
Whilst on a KeeDiet meal replacement plan there could be a temporary change in the menstrual cycle. Your menstrual cycle and hormone levels fluctuate when there are changes in weight – particularly in women. For most, the menstrual cycle is not affected, but in some women breakthrough bleeding may occur. Others may find that their periods stop for a while. Fertility may also change and unexpected pregnancies do occur, thus even if a woman has been trying unsuccessfully to become pregnant she needs to be wary of the fact that during and after weight loss her fertility may increase. Rapid weight-loss with very low calorie diets may temporarily affect the menstrual cycle patterns; ovulation, however is probably not interrupted. The metabolism of contraceptive pills may be affected during effective weight loss so extra care may be needed.
Can I still use Contraception on my weight loss plan?
Contraception is permitted on all KeePlans and not contra-indicated. Although no contraceptive method is 100% guaranteed it is an effective method in reducing unwanted pregnancies. Low-calorie diet plans and products including VLCDS do not adversely affect contraceptive function BUT it should be remembered that the pill is not 100% effective when following our lower calorie plans as your hormones levels can fluctuate and affect menstrual cycles although ovulation is probably not interrupted. Losing weight can actually increase hormone function and improves fertility.
Women using a contraceptive barrier method should visit their family planning advisor regularly (approx each 7lb) to confirm if a different size is required and it may be adviseable to use additional contraception alongside. Those using contraceptive implants, pill, or injection may still experience some break through bleeding or heavier periods than usual or even stop for a while.
I have a cold/cough, what medications can I use
It is extremely difficult to continue to follow a VLCD plan or low calorie plan whilst fighting a cold or cough. Following our diet as laid out in your plan contains all the nutrients required for normal health but when
you a fighting an infection you may do this more effectively on a higher
energy intake. While you recover you should raise your energy intake
to a higher level. Remember that cough and cold remedies often contain
sugar so you may want to choose sugar-free versions.

Do I mix your Total Shakes with water or milk?
ProtiKee
are a European Meal Replacement product. The preference in Europe is to mix
shakes with skimmed / soya milk for higher calories. Those
wishing to follow a UK rapid weight loss plan with a lower calorie option, can exchange the milk required for water to mix Total Shakes & Total Oatmeal. Do not skip meals though as your daily calorie intake should not fall below 425kcal per day as a minimum,
so don't skip packs!
As some products are desgined to be mixed with milk, how you choose to mix them and what product you select, it is possible that some nutrients may fall slightly short of the 100% RDA recommended in the UK, this shortfall is minimal & easily rectified with the inclusion of the required daily vitamin & mineral supplement mentioned on your plan.
In fact 100% RDA is the daily recommended minimum advised for vitamins & minerals and not the maximum, when dieting it is suggested that more is required for continued good health. Alongside this supplement on the VLCD KeeDiet plan and LCD plans we promote the inclusion of nuts, seeds and optional vegetables or salad to offer even more valuable nutrients, extra necessary fibre and healthy fats
Can I choose Total ProtiKee & High Protein ProtiKee?
Yes you can ! On all our plans you can select products from both the Total and High Protein ranges, ensuring you have the opportunity to experience a VLCD with soooooooooo much variety, flavour, high protein and additional vitamins & minerals plus using all our interesting lines you'll never get bored.
Our
High Protein products are the original KeeDiet meal replacements and
extremely high quality products that are really satisfying with a huge 18g of protein, often
selected by professional weight loss clinics and obesity centres for just this reason. They
are preferred by many due to their Protein : Carb Ratio and also because
they are lower in calories dieters can use up to 6 products daily for approximately 600kcal. This
is extremely helpful for those with a BMI 30+ with the occasion to
snack. Three meals and Three Snacks* !
Our
Total products joined the ranks for the UK market in 2009 and has been selling out since. Being designed to include essential vitamins & minerals and
when used as designed for the European market, (sweet flavours mixed with skimmed/soya milk + x2
bars = 1 meal) offers a total meal replacement diet. Minimum &
Maxium of x4 Total products daily on Rapid burn, although x2 extra High
Protein products can be added if required, which is great if a taller lady, man or someone with an active lifestyle.
KeeDiet Rapid Burn Plans has been specifically designed for the UK, offering a minimum x3 meal replacement sachets and x1 MealBar/ SnackWafer from either Total or High Protein line alongside the other items listed on your plan. Our plans provide a clear and concise breakdown .....
- Daily Requirements - those to be used every day
- Advised - those we stongly recommend
- Optional - those which may make dieting easier without affect your bodyline & ketosis.
*we suggest that our Gourmet Snacks are treated as an extra product. Extra products can be used on all our plans, just look in your Optional Extra's, these are so handy for that tough day, and on exercise days etc.
How many products are required?
The minimum
products and what you need to include each day is laid out in your plan
as Daily Requirements. There is an option on all plans to use optional extra's (eg: Rapid burn Any x4 products as a minimum + x2 extra High Protein products). Our High Protein line
are brilliant when used on their own or mixed with Total ProtiKee as they
exceptionally low in carbohydrates/sugar/calorie/fat so will not affect your
bodyline or ketosis.
The minimum amount of products on our Rapid Burn plan is x4 products / KeeLite is x3 products + one healthy 200kcal meal as directed. Extra products can save you from picking on a particularly tough day, when you have exercised, and are advised for taller ladies (5'7"+) and men or those with a BMI 30+ who wish to control snacking and decrease meals slowly.
What products are suitable for vegetarians?
Most of our products are suitable for vegetarians and are soya based meal replacements, although ProtiKee MealBars & Wafers are generally considered not suitable due to gluten content. A list of all ingredients is provided for each product and their status available on display for you to view. Generally all shakes, desserts, hot meals, drinks and cold drinks, Soy Puffs & Nuts are suitable for vegetarians to use.
Are ProtiKee products Kosher ?
While many of our products may be considered Kosher based on ingredient listings, they are not certified as Kosher at this time. This is something that we are working on!
I am lactose intolerant is this a problem?
The majority of our products contain one form or another of dairy protein (i.e. whey protein concentrate, calcium caseinate). These ingredients contain very small amounts of lactose. ProtiKee products with dairy proteins contain 2 grams or less of lactose (compare that with a 4 oz. cup of milk, which contains approximately 5 grams).
Do ProtiKee contain Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) contain iodine?
The oils we use in our EFA capsules are refined to full edible oil standards, and they do not contain iodine.
Are your products gluten-free? What about other food allergens?
While most of our products do not contain ingredients that are direct contributors of gluten, our products are not certified gluten-free. Even with strict adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), there is the rare possibility for extremely hard to detect traces of gluten to be found in machinery or raw materials used during manufacturing. Furthermore, In January 2006, the FDA required ingredients contributing to the following categories of major food allergens to be clearly displayed on all food products: Soy, Eggs, Nuts, Milk, Wheat and Shellfish. It has been our practice to clearly disclose such ingredients even before the new food labeling guideline went into effect.
Do products contain Sucralose?
If a product sold by us contains sucralose, it will be found in the ingredients list on the nutritional panels.
Do products contain Asparatame?
If a product sold by us contains asparatme, it will be found in the ingredients list on the nutritional panels.
Why is there an age limit for VLCD's?
Children or those under 14 years of age are contra-indicated and should not use any KeeDiet Plan or replace daily meals with our products. Instead parents and guardians should promote the use a variety of healthy conventional foods and reduce the childs use of highly procesed foods which generally are high calorie, fat and carbohydrate products, try as much as possible to stick with whole foods, and those which have had little manufacturing but are in their natural state.
Those aged between 14-18 years should also be encouraged to do the same but with parent and doctors approval and involvement could consider a plan offering above 1000kcal per day, plans with less than 800kcal daily should not be used.
Why do Kee suggest Nuts & Seeds?
Alongside the recommended supplement on the VLCD KeeDiet plans and LCD plans we promote the inclusion of limited nuts, seeds and optional vegetables or salad to offer even more valuable nutrients, extra necessary fibre and healthy fats. Their inclusion offers a great source of healthy oils that can help eradicate common side effects. Click here for further advice.
Why so much water?
Because food contains much water (up to 70% of our daily intake) when you eat less you will naturally consume less water; this needs to be replaced. Drinking plenty of water will also naturally deal with many of the common side effects of a weight loss, for example, constipation, dehydration including headaches, dizziness, aching muscles. Drinking extra water will help you to eliminate waste products and remove the by-products of the fat that's broken down. ProtiKee products are a highly concentrated food, drinking plenty of water will help to dilute the products to an easier and acceptable level for you to enjoy.
Remember the rule, 2¼ Litres of water is required as a minimum on all programmes. For better results it is ideal to work towards 3-4 litres each day. This amount of water does include, tea, coffee and is inclusive of tap, bottled, sparkling water only (Malic Acid drink flavourings can be added, but any drink with Citric Acid must be avoided- this includes, alcohol, squash, lemon slices in your tea or hot water). It is strongly suggested that 3 litres of water is consumed as tea & coffee do act as a direutic and your organs and muscles do not get the full benefit of the liquid.
Why do Kee plans require a vitamin & mineral supplement?
Dependant on the products you select & how you choose to mix them, it is possible that some nutrients may fall slightly short of 100% RDA , this shortfall is minimal but easily rectified with the inclusion of the required daily vitamin & mineral supplement as stated on your plan.
100% RDA is the recommended minimum vitamins & minerals required and NOT the maximum, when dieting it is suggested that more is required for continued good health. If you select to choose a mixture of High Protein and Total products you will be getting the benefit of higher protein, more nutrition than 100% and feel great with sufficient carbohydrates. Alongside this supplement on the VLCD KeeDiet plans and LCD plans we promote the inclusion of nuts, seeds and optional vegetables or salad to offer even more valuable nutrients, extra necessary fibre and healthy fats
What does my body need?
To stay healthy the human body needs the essential nutrients. ProtiKee Total include essential vitamins & minerals, whilst our High Protein Range do not. ProtiKee is designed for the European market where they prefer to take extra products or mix shakes with skimmed milk, in the UK we seem to prefer x4 products each day with sweet flavours mixed with water and therefore some vitamins & minerals may fall slightly short of the 100% RDA required. This is simply rectified by the inclusion of the required daily vitamin & mineral supplement.
In fact 100%
RDA is the recommended minimum vitamins & minerals required and when
dieting it is suggested that more is required for continued good
health. Alongside this supplement on the VLCD KeeDiet plans and
LCD plans we promote the inclusion of nuts, seeds and optional
vegetables or salad to offer even more valuable nutrients, necessary
fibre and healthy fats.
